International Order of Khemetic Gnosis and Illuminism

We were chartered as an independent, Esoteric and Mixed (open to aspirants of any gender or sexuality) Masonic Obedience which uses the Ancient and Primitive Rite of Memphis & Misraïm on April 15, 2017 Era Vulgaris.

Presently we have bodies in the United States of America, Greece, Spain, Argentina and the Philippines. We are in the process of chartering additional lodges in Brazil, Barbados and the United Kingdom. In addition to our order’s own expansion we have also chartered three additional, independent and sovereign, esoteric Masonic Orders that work the Ancient and Primitive Rite of Memphis – Misraïm; two based in Mexico and one based in the United States of America. We are the fastest growing Masonic Order affiliated with the Progressive Universal stream of Freemasonry.

We are very excited by these opportunities to reach out, help our fellow humans near or far and to add members to our rapidly – expanding Order from around the world! Please check in frequently as you can see that we are building and spreading very quickly. FIAT LVX!

The first 33 of these degrees (i.e. ritual initiations) are extremely similar to the 33 Degrees of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, teach the same essential lessons and have the same titles as the degrees of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite. They are considered the equivalent of the 33 Degrees of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite. Obviously, the compendium of instruction within the entire Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite is a fraction of the teachings found within the much more extensive Ancient and Primitive Rite of Memphis – Misraïm. Many orders that use the Ancient and Primitive Rite of Memphis – Misraïm have incorporated a Supreme Council into their structure for the fourth to thirty – third degrees.  Although this is an innovation incorporated to align more easily with other orders that use the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite (i.e. to facilitate visitations between orders and treaties of amity at the higher degree levels), we see no harm in doing this and we have treaties with orders who use such structures.

That being said, we prefer to maintain the traditional structure within our order, which uses seven structural bodies in addition to the Symbolic Lodge Degrees.  We also use the Pre-FUDOSI 97 Degree structure.  Some orders that use the rite prefer the FUDOSI – established structure with 99 Degrees.  FUDOSI was a series of international gatherings between various esoteric orders between 1934 and 1951. Among the various motions passed, one was to raise the number of degrees of the Ancient and Primitive Rite of Memphis & Misraïm from 97 to 99.

Needless to say, not all lineages of the APRMM attended FUDOSI and many rejected their raising of the numbers of degrees. In fact, many of these more traditional APRMM lineages refuse to sign treaties of amity with other APRMM lineages simply on account of their usage of the 99 degree structure. We see no harm in this evolution or innovation.  Although we use the original structure of 97 degrees, we have treaties of amity with some orders that use the 99 degree structure and respect their practices as they respect ours.

Typically, the 1° to 86° are practiced in accordance with the Rite of Memphis (although our symbolic lodges – which work the first three basic degrees – are able to work the Rite of Memphis, the Rite of Misraïm, the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite or – in certain circumstances – the Rectified Rite of Bavaria). The 87° to 90° are the Arcana Arcanorum of the Rite of Misraïm practiced at Naples (i.e. they are the 87° to 90° of the Rite of Misraïm). These ritual initiations not only mark the crown of the Rite of Misraïm, but they are also seen as a review of all of the previous degrees. The 91° to 96° are, once again, done according to the Rite of Memphis. The 97° is reserved for the Grand Hierophant of the Order.

As with many, if not most, orders that use the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, the Philosophical Degrees (4° to 33°) are not all performed as full initiation rituals. Many of these degrees are trasmitted via lecture. The Degrees that are traditionally worked fully within these bodies are the following: in the Colleges – 9°, 12°, 13° and 14°; in the Chapters – 16° and 18°; in the Senates – 20° and in the Areopage/Tribunals – 27°, 28°, 29°, 30°, 32° and 33°.

For the other degrees at these levels (i.e. Philosophical), the candidates are usually given the background overview and lecture of the degree ceremony. Then they swear the oath and they are given the passwords, signs, etc. of each Degree. As the Order is still young and growing, there are special acceleration steps taken presently on new, fertile soil, but once the Order is situated in place within a nation, the inculcation of the mysteries takes on the Tradition.

From the 34° onward, the degrees that are actually practiced fully as initiation rituals are generally the 66°, which is often practiced as a replacement and equivalence to the Consecration in the Gnosis or in addition to a Gnostic Consecration as Bishop, the 87° to 90° (mentioned previously) and the 95°. These degrees are known as the Hermetic Degrees. Be aware that some orders prefer to use the term “Hermetic Degrees” specifically for the 87° to 90°.

Some orders may additionally select other degrees to be performed fully as initiation rituals. Within our order we give a fair amount of autonomy to the National Sovereign Sanctuaries to select additional degrees to be performed ritually as they see fit. For example, Scandinavian National Sovereign Sanctuaries (which we hope will be established in the near future) might also select the 34° to be fully performed ritually, as this degree alludes to the Mysteries of Asatru, the Norse Tradition.

Thus, the International Order of Khemetic Gnosis and Illuminism is divided into two governing structures:  1. The Sovereign Grand Lodge of Khemetic Gnosis and Illuminism and 2. The Sovereign Sanctuary of Khemetic Gnosis and Illuminism.

Who May Join?

We are open to adults of good report over the age of 18 who are NOT “Regular” Freemasons allied with the United Grand Lodge of England. If you are a “Regular” Freemason, your lodge’s rules forbid you from joining our order. You must first send an official letter of resignation to your Grand Lodge’s Grand Secretary and receive a return email confirming your resignation from that Grand Lodge.

Rosicrucians and Golden Dawn members who are of Adeptus Minor/Adepta Minora grade or above (who have passed the initiation in the vault) may be granted a “Master Mason” equivalency diploma, provided that they are NOT “Regular” Freemasons.

Likewise, because Ordo Templi Orientis originated as an esoteric Masonic order based on the Ancient and Primitive Rite of Memphis – Misraïm, anyone who is of “Master Magician” (third degree, equivalent of “Master Mason”) grade or above – and is NOT a “Regular” Freemason (please see above) – is entitled to the “Master Mason” equivalency degree within our order, should he or she be inclined to join.

We are also open to granting Master Mason status to Master Masons from Progressive and Independent Masonic Orders that are NOT affiliated or allied with the United Grand Lodge of England and wish to join our Order as well. We are not in the business of “stealing” or “converting” people out of other Masonic Orders and into ours but we have no issue with providing dual membership status to those who are qualified, provided that their original Obedience has been made aware of this and is not opposed.

Be aware that being granted “Master Mason” status does not exempt one from passing the dual track curriculum of the Symbolic Degree levels, something which is discussed with those who are accepted into the Order.
